FREE 3-MINUTE ASSESSMENT

What’s Your
Meaning Profile?

Most people have never measured their relationship with meaning. This 10-question assessment is built on the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ), one of the most widely used instruments in the science of well-being, published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology and used by researchers around the world for twenty years. It gives you two scores and one of four profiles.

The science behind the quiz

This quiz is built on the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, or MLQ, developed by Michael Steger and colleagues and published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology in 2006. It measures the two dimensions that shape your relationship with meaning: how much of it you have found (presence), and how hard you are looking (search). It is free and takes about three minutes.

Why this matters

Here’s your starting point to build a happier, more meaningful life

Knowing how much meaning you have found, and how actively you are searching for it, is useful self-knowledge. It won’t tell you what your life means, but informs what to work on next.

Relentless Seeker

You have found meaning and keep digging for more

Happy Homebody

You have found meaning and feel no need to look further

Hopeful Wanderer

You are searching hard and have not landed yet

Lost
in Place

You are neither settled nor searching, at least for now

What the quiz is, and what it isn't

A validated instrument from the science of meaning, not a personality quiz that hands you back what you already believe about yourself.

What you will walk away with

Two scores, and what they mean

  • How much meaning you have already found in your life

  • How actively you are searching for more of it right now

  • Which of the four meaning profiles you are in, and what that looks like day to day

  • An honest read on the strengths and the costs of your profile

  • A starting point for the longer conversation about what a meaningful life asks of you

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PROFESSOR, DR. ARTHUR BROOKS

Why the “meaning question” deserves a real instrument

Hi, I'm Arthur, professor, writer, and social scientist. I have spent most of my career studying the science of happiness, and the question I get asked often isn’t how to feel better. It is how to build a life that means something.

Most people carry that question around for decades without ever giving it priority.

This questionnaire will not tell you what your life means. No instrument can do that. What it can do is show you where you are standing right now, and which of the four profiles you are in. That is a useful place to begin.
