FREE 5-MINUTE DARK TRIAD ASSESSMENT

How Dark is Your Personality?

Human beings are capable of extraordinary goodness. We are also capable of selfishness, manipulation, and cruelty. We might prefer to see these qualities in other people, but the truth is that we all have them to some degree. This quiz measures three of them (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) and shows you where you stand on each.

The science behind the quiz

In 2002, psychologists grouped three socially aversive but distinct personality traits under one name: the Dark Triad. Researchers are careful to note that these are not diagnoses. They are dimensional personality traits, which means a person can show tendencies toward them without having a personality disorder. The quiz is free and takes about 5 minutes.

Why this matters

Know yourself, and the people you love, a little better

These traits show up in everyday life: at work, in friendships, and in romantic relationships. Knowing where you stand is useful self-knowledge. Your scores won't define you, but they will point you toward what to work on, and help you understand the people around you.

Narcissism

"It's all about me"

The goal isn't to think less of yourself. It is to think of yourself less.

Machiavellianism

"I will hurt you or use you for my gain"

Using people as tools is not a promising way to build a life full of people who love and trust you.

Psychopathy

"I'll have little remorse when I hurt you"
‍
Knowing what is right and feeling moved to do it are not the same thing.

What the quiz is, and what it isn't

A look at three well-studied personality traits, not a clinical diagnosis. A high score simply suggests you may show some of these tendencies more than the average person.

What you will walk away with

Three scores, and what they mean

  • Your narcissism score

  • Your Machiavellianism score

  • Your psychopathy score

  • How each trait can show up in your daily life and relationships

  • Practical steps to turn the dial down, for yourself and for the people you love

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PROFESSOR, DR. ARTHUR BROOKS

Why it’s worth looking at the dark side

I'm a professor, writer, and social scientist, and I spend most of my time studying what makes people happier. So why ask you to look at your darkest traits?

Because we can't change what we won't look at. Narcissus wasn't ruined by loving himself. He was ruined because he couldn't pull his attention away from his own reflection long enough to love anyone else. Each of these traits, in its own way, turns us away from other people.

The good news is that the way out is the same for all three: turn outward. Be curious about others. Build real friendships, not deal friendships. Do what's right, even when you don't feel like it. This quiz will show you where to start.
